Wormholes and surface defects in rational ensemble holography

This work investigates examples of ensemble holography, where a theory of gravity in anti-de Sitter spacetime computes an average over an ensemble of conformal field theories. An important role is played in this setting by wormhole geometries connecting several boundaries. The paper contains the novel realization that ensemble holography requires the inclusion of surface defects in wormhole geometries. This result has since then been confirmed by Shapere and Dimarsky using a different approach.
