The paper shows that current models of hadronic interactions cannot describe atmospheric showers of extremely energetic particles. We have been able to determine by how much the prediction of the position of the shower maximum in the atmosphere and the increase in the intensity of the hadronic component would have to be increased to simultaneously determine the chemical composition of the cosmic rays and data from the Pierre Auger Observatory.
