Hole Self-Trapping in Y3Al5O12 and Lu3Al5O12 Garnet Crystals

Text

Scintillators with garnet crystals structure have attracted major attention due to their application in medical imagining, particle beam diagnostics and their usage in other modern instruments. The scintillation mechanism may be complicated and their performance can be reduced if the capture of
charge carriers occurs before they can reach emission centres. This work provides a detailed description and explanation of the capture mechanism both for electrons and holes in garnet crystal structure, thus contributing to the understanding and the optimalisation of the complete group of those scintillators.
