Multiferroics, simultaneously exhibiting several types of spontaneous ordering, are at the forefront of basic research for their high application potential. They can be utilized in spintronics, memory elements, as sensors or detectors.

Hyperfine interactions studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy yield information about ordering in multiferroics, and contribute to the understanding of microscopical mechanism of cross-coupling effects and their tailoring by modifications at atomic scale. Mössbauer spectroscopy, using 57Fe nucleus as local probe, provides detail information about structural and magnetic transitions, valence and magnetic moments of Fe atoms in different crystallographic sites, local crystal symmetry and the effect of cation surrounding. Investigations of materials as ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles, magnetite (Fe3O4) and perovskites Pb/Ba(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3, Pb(Fe1/2Sb1/2)O3) with promising multiferroic properties are under go.
