Hybrid nanocomposites and supramolecular assemblies

We are preparing and studying hybrid materials and systems based on liquid crystalline (LC) compounds and nanoparticles. The interaction between nanoparticles and LC molecules strongly depends on the particular combination of the type, size, shape and physical properties of both constituents. Various types of metal or magnetic nanoparticles functionalized with ligands based on liquid crystalline molecules as well as mixtures of both constituents have been prepared and studied.

Phase diagram shows x-ray intensity, which evidences presence of smectic liquid crystalline structure in a temperature interval for silver nanoparticles with mesogenic ligands.
