Smectic liquid crystalline materials on molecular and nano level (SLCMnano)

Abstract

The overall objective of the project for scientific collaboration is to combine the unique ability of the self-organization of mesogenic liquid crystalline (LC) systems by designing new materials and mixtures with definite properties. The particular goals of this project are: (I)To design and synthesize new chiral smectic low molar mass liquid crystalline materials of various structure and study of their mesomorphic, structural, dielectric and electro-optic properties in order to contribute to better understanding of molecular structure – physical property relationship and also the character and origin of detected mesophases. (II)To design and study new functional liquid crystalline mixtures possessing properties which should respond definite demands making them applicable for novel electro-optic devices and photonics. (III)To develop a theoretical explanation of new effects, structures and properties which can be found in new smectic liquid crystalline materials with polar ordering on molecular and nano scales and to investigate the relation between molecular architecture– nano-organization of new LC materials and the resulted composites.
