The project objective is to use laser treatment to improve the durability of super-hard machining materials. The laser processes are laser shock peening which prevents crack propagation and laser surface texturing which improves the tool cooling and more. The laser development will be developed in combination with PVD coatings which are commonly applied to super-hard tools. Here, the technology of laser cleaning will also be utilized. A part of the project is also a parallel development of a new and more efficient type of PVD coating which will be optimized for the laser treatment. The development will be supported by advanced computer simulations. The project outcome should be optimized scalable production procedures for carbide inserts and drills with positive economic returns.
