Effect of surface treatments on the performance of silicon-based secondary materials in cementitious composites

Abstract

The project is focused on enhancement of silicon-based secondary materials (Si-SM) bonding when Si-SM used in cementitious composites in order to replace portions of fine-grained aggregates and the binder itself. Different types of Si-SM will be modified using various surface treatments. The modified Si-SM will be thoroughly studied to determine the interactions with cement and alternative binders, the impact on the thickness and quality of interfacial transition zones (ITZs) in the hardened composites, and the effect on hydration processes. These findings will provide a deeper understanding of the interactions between Si-SM and the contribution of their surface modifications on ITZ formation. An optimal strategy for Si-based waste materials recycling will be outlined in order to promote the sustainability of the concrete industry.
