Among extra activities of the Department of Semiconductors should be mentioned organisation of prestigious, highly recognized series of international conferences FQMT (IC Frontiers of Quantum and Mesoscopic Thermodynamics, fqmt.fzu.cz), for years exclusively held in Prague (2004, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019). The permanent Chairman of both program and organizing committees, V. Špička, and many other members of organizing committee belong just to our Department. During the years the scope of the conferences changed appreciably; now the conferences bear multidisciplinary character, dealing with the carefully selected hot topics ranging from quantum physics and quantum thermodynamics to biophysics, astrophysics and cosmology. Such an exciting program step by step attracted many outstanding scientists, so that, for example, among participants of the last conference (2019) were four Nobel Prize winners (W. Ketterle, W. Phillips, G.’t Hooft, R. Weiss) and other scientists of the highest rank (e.g. F. Capasso, P. Hänggi, W. Schleich, M. Scully). Since some of the conference topics are closely related to our scientific interests, we have been regularly giving invited lectures there
