Exploring the Potential of a Versatile Surface Science System: Challenges and Opportunities

Text

We all know the famous saying of Nobel laureate Herbert Kroemer, "Interface is a device." Sharp interfaces, comprising adjusted surfaces, often pose complexities attributed to their heterogeneity and defects. Systems integrating sample preparation methods with immediate, in-situ characterization hold immense promise for unravelling material intricacies at the atomic level. In this presentation, I will introduce a state-of-the-art Surface Science system currently operational at the Joint Research Institute in Karlsruhe, which combines a versatile sputtering system using microtargets with diverse spectroscopies (XPS, UPS, BIS, HREELS, TDS), other diagnostic methods (LEED), and technology chambers containing e.g. an atom source. UHV rating of 10^-11 mbar can be crucial for some of applications. This system, which could be acquired for free at FzU*, holds promise for enhancing understanding of material properties, optimizing materials design, improving catalytic processes, and addressing environmental and energy-related challenges.  Further possibilities will be discussed. Questions and comments welcome.
