Czech European Researchers' Night is now a traditional autumn festival at the Institute of Physics. This year it is taking place in October, on Friday 6th and the theme is exploring the world Mysteries.
Come to FZU to explore the mysteries of physics. When? Friday the 6th of October.
At the Slovanka site, the event will be held from 4 to 9:30 pm.
Entrance:
Through the new building SOLID from the street Pod Vodárenskou věží 3

How well do we know our Universe? |
In the fun&relax zone, you will find popular staples such as a guided tour of the cloud chamber, VR with the research and detection of particles and cosmic radiation, or a levitation train track. Special English-only stands include Black holes and Fun with memory alloy exhibit.
Let’s have some fun with alloy (16:00 - 19:30)
Do you know an alloy can bend and then straight? Let’s have some dance with them. It’s a very special alloy called shape memory alloy that can do some movement with hot and cold. We could bend them and when we put them in hot water. It goes straight automatically or vice versa. How and why, it happens? What’s the secret behind it? Some do not even want to bend. If you want to see the magic and know the story of this material, come, and visit us at FZU. Let’s have some fun.
Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Black Holes (16:00 - 21:30)
Come discover the model of black holes and gravity waves and discuss it with our itnernational team.
Galactic bestiary
Ivana Ebrová / 17:30 / workshop, boooking
Do you want to experience the work of a scientist who searches through seemingly boring elliptical galaxies, looking for traces revealing the mysteries of their distant past? First, we are going to demonstrate, using numerical simulations, what happens to those elliptical galaxies that consume their less fortunate neighbors. Then we'll set out for the real Universe: using images from some of the world's largest telescopes, you will be able to look for traces of galactic cannibalism in real galaxies yourselves. With some luck, you could be the first to identify evidence of such a horrendous act in a particular galaxy that has so far been considered innocent!
Workshop for interested participants 12+ years.
Optical furnace excursion
Jaroslav Čapek / 16:30 / excursion, booking
Optical furnace for crystal preparation by the floating zone technique:
At our group this equipment is mainly used for the preparation of metallic single crystals, or bi-crystals with precisely defined grain boundaries. The prepared materials allow us to investigate for example mechanical and magnetic properties of the basic structure uninits - single crystals and grain boundaries - of these materials. The obtained data can be used for example in modelling of real - polycrystalline - materials.
In this equipment, the material is melted by light, which is focused into a narrow zone. This allows reaching temperatures around 2600 °C.
Revealing the Beauty of Microstructures
Jaromír Kopeček / 18:30 / excursion, booking
Have you ever wondered what helps our scientists reveal the mysteries of the nanoscale world? How can we observe objects smaller than the wavelength of visible light? Experts from the Laboratory of Electron Microscopy will show you that and more. You'll see what they are working on now and, thanks to the top-notch Czech imager Tescan FERA 3, you'll be able to observe several examples of surprisingly elegant microstructures of everyday objects.
How well do we know our Universe?
Alexander Vikman / 20:00 / lecture, booking
How did our Universe originate and evolve, and what future awaits it? Come for a popular review of the current state of knowledge on the origins, evolution, and future of our Universe, including topics such as the Big Bang theory, cosmic inflation, dark matter, and the current accelerating expansion of the Universe.
During the Researchers' Night you are also invited to visit our laser centre HiLASE in Dolní Břežany.
Please note that this event is open to the public. Photographs and video footage of the event are taken for reporting purposes and to promote the event on our website and social media.
