LabTime

Perex

LabTime is the label for our science excursions dedicated to high school and university students, it is primarily intended for students of natural sciences and technical disciplines who are looking for fulfilling research careers or theses supervisors at FZU. Some excursions are also suitable for highly motivated 2nd grade primary school students.

What is it like to work as a scientist in the Czech Republic? What are the research topics and open positions at FZU? How does a day at one of our labs look like? These any many other questions can be answered in LabTime.

Come and explore our facilities. As an internationally recognized scientific institution, we have something to offer for everyone, from state-of-the-art equipment to innovative working methods, all in a pleasant and refreshingly personal atmosphere.

During the excursion you will get acquainted with our leading scientists, the topics of their research and the equipment of our laboratories. You will have the opportunity to soak up the atmosphere of your prospective workplace.

Excursions in English:

Come and try working with a quantum computer! - EN - 90 minutes - 10 to 15 students

Have you ever wondered how quantum computers work? Would you like to gain access to the enormous potential they hold? Would you like to try writing your own program for them?

If your answer to all these questions is "yes", sign up for our cutting-edge workshop for curious and adventurous future scientists! Our offer is for enthusiastic, mathematically proficient high school and university students with a good understanding of high school physics. Participants will gain an overview of the current state of knowledge in the field of quantum computing, have the analogies of quantum phenomena explained to them in a visual way, and also gain remote access to the IBM-Q quantum computer. All this will take place in the Institute of Physics. The workshop will be led by our researcher Subhroneel Chakrabarti, Ph.D. The program is in English.

If you are interested in participating in the program, please write to: pr [at] fzu [dot] cz (pr[at]fzu[dot]cz).

Excursion to the laboratory for testing silicon detectors – both Czech and English – 90 minutes – limited number of places (6 persons)

A professional excursion for high school students with a focus on physics, university students and the professional public. Are you interested in how the electrical, mechanical and radiation properties of the silicon strip sensors that will detect ultra-relativistic particles produced by proton or heavy ion collisions at the High-Luminosity LHC accelerator at CERN are tested? Come and visit our clean lab to learn about the state-of-the-art measurement instruments and technologies for research and development in particle physics.

The excursion is only open to students over the age of 15; teachers are responsible for students under the age of 18.

If you are interested in participating in the program, please write to: federicova [at] fzu [dot] cz (federicova[at]fzu[dot]cz) or kroll [at] fzu [dot] cz (kroll[at]fzu[dot]cz) or pr [at] fzu [dot] cz (pr[at]fzu[dot]cz).

Beams, lasers, atoms - physics with all senses - both Czech and English - 5 hours - capacity 8 to 18 seats

Experience an evening of exciting hands-on physics down to the core of matter without lengthy technical lectures, but with plenty of experiments revealing the beauty of the nanoworld. Five hours that can direct your future.

Want to experience first-hand what physics is all about? Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman says: "Physics is like sex, it can produce practical results, but that's not why we do it." We want to show you why physics is worth spending long hours and days in dark laboratories for. If you spend an evening with us at the Institute of Physics (IOP), you'll not only see cutting-edge scientific instruments, but more importantly, you'll learn and experience how they're really used and what they're used to investigate and why. Don't expect long boring lectures, but real science - real measurements with the scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and Raman spectrometer, all under the guidance of FZU scientists. Through hands-on experiments, you will discover the microstructure, chemical composition and electrical properties of the samples you are examining. The program consists of three approximately one-hour blocks dedicated to scientific physics, which will be complemented by non-serious (but no less fun :)) physics during breaks - experiments with liquid nitrogen. If the weather permits, we will roast marshmallows for joint research.

WHEN? in the evening (approximately 16:00 - 21:00), usually at the end of September
WHERE? Institute of Physics of the CAS, Cukrovarnická 10, Prague 6
FOR WHO? intended for students of physics and technical universities, or for highly motivated students of the final year of high school; capacity: 8-18 seats; available in both Czech and English
