Ferroelectric properties of liquid crystalline phases

Text

Our research is concentrated on chiral rod-like compounds and mesophases with a dipolar order. In addition to the conventional types of liquid crystalline molecules (rod-like, hockey-stick or bend-core), recent research effort in LC field has increasingly focused on non-conventional mesogens, bearing additional functionality or with specific physical properties. The physical properties are studied and discussed with respect to unusual molecular shape and structure, connectivity of molecular segments and space-filling effect, with the aim to contribute to better understanding the structure-property relationship.

Description
The texture of liquid crystalline compound exhibiting the fan-shaped texture, without applied electric field (left) and under the field of about 20 V/mm. In the bottom part there is a polarization current profile evidencing the antiferroelectric type of switching.
