Summary

Joint Laboratory of Low Temperature is a cooperation project of Institute of Physics (department 11), Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics (Department of Low-temperature Physics) and Faculty of Science of Charles University. The laboratory provides experimental channels to measure 57Fe  and 119Sn Mössbauer spectra of surface layers or bulk  materials from 4.2 K up to 1300 K, in external magnetic field perpendicular to the γ-rays up to 6 Tesla at low temperatures (up to RT), at increased hydrostatic pressure up to 50 GPa, and in vacuum or in various ambient environment.

    Typical applications of Mössbauer spectroscopy:

    • atomic-level characterization of correlation of structural modifications and magnetic properties of material (oxidation state, bonding properties, spin state, local crystal symmetry)
    • determine phase composition of samples containing mössbauer isotope (use in chemical engineering, mineralogy, geology, metallurgy)
    • study structural defects and transformations of materials exposed to extreme conditions (high temperatures, pressure, corrosive environment, radiation damage)
    • study surface layers

In addition to technological applications, the group focuses on the development and application of magnetic nanoparticles in biomedical and biophysical research.
