Silicate glass modified with electron beams

Abstract

Silicate glass is widely used in industry and its bulk properties are well known on empirical base. Little is known about the non-standard glass states among them glass surface and irradiated glass belong. Glass is in many applications insurmountable material and modification of its properties beyond the current limits is of great demand. Starting from the basic prototypes of silicate glass and pointing to the industrial Float glass the project will monitor the influence of the composition on the properties of irradiated glass. The project intends to explore “offequilibrium glass” and its properties obtained by modification of the quenched glass by electron beams. Structure, optical properties, chemical and radiation resistances, and volume changes will be of primary focus. Bulk and surface of glass will be compared and the experimental findings will be supported with the atomistic simulations. The project is also closely related with the hot topics as glass corrosion, biocompatibility, nanotechnology, and chemical and radiation resistances of glass
