Scientists from the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, University of Chemical Technology and Zentiva published an article on new ways of exploitation of electron diffraction on nanocrystalline materials. The new method is faster and more accurate in determining the absolute configuration of organic molecules including those used in pharmaceuticals, and will significantly influence the process of development of new drugs: it will be cheaper and more effective.

Antonín Fejfar - who is the member of the Academic Council and the Deputy Director of the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences – spoke at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. He gave a presentation on the mission of the Academy of Sciences in Czech science and education as a whole at a two-day conference entitled “Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development” (STI Forum) on the 14th and 15th of May.

The ELI Beamlines and HiLASE laser centres situated in Dolní Břežany will offer students of secondary schools an opportunity to enrol to the Talent Academy for the third time. They will be able to try what it is like to work as researchers at professional laboratories. The best participants of the Talent Academy will be offered further cooperation by the laser centers in the form of internships during which students will be able to engage in real scientific projects working together with leading laser physicists.

President of the Czech Academy of Sciences Eva Zažímalová awarded four honorary medals at a ceremonial meeting on 24th April 2019. The awarded researchers included three physicists, out of whom two have close relationships with the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences - doc. RNDr. Dušan Bruncko, CSc., and prof. dr. Hubert Ebert.

The results of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellowhips (MSCA IF) 2018 were announced at the end of February. Gizem Sengör, Ph.D, a member of Dr. Constantinos Skordis’ team at the FZU and the new MSCA fellow, will start working on her project in the autumn of 2019. She will be joining the group of MSCA fellows at FZU. Gizem Sengör will concentrate on the description of fields in cosmic epochs of accelerated expansion.

Representatives of US and European laboratories, companies and funding agencies are meeting for the first time on 21-22 February 2019 at ELI Beamlines in the Czech Republic to discuss opportunities for US- European scientific and technological cooperation with ELI.

The Lumina Quaeruntur Premium is to provide financial support for prospective researchers to set up their own research team for a period of up to five years. The Academy of Sciences presented the programme and its first six laureates during a ceremony held at Národní třída, Prague, on Thursday, January 17th. One of the laureates is RNDr. Hana Lísalová, Ph.D. from the Department of Optical and Biophysical Systems of the Institute of Physics of the CAS (FZU).
