The scientific work of our colleague, Mgr. Ing. Oleg Heczko, Dr., DSc., was recognized with the prestigious title of Doctor of Science.

"Earning a DSc. doctorate primarily confirms that its recipients have contributed entirely new and original insights to their field, thereby enriching global scientific research as well as our national cultural and scientific heritage," said Radomír Pánek, President of the Czech Academy of Sciences, in his opening remarks at the ceremony.

Oleg Heczko is a distinguished scientist in the field of magnetic materials and one of the leading experts on physical phenomena in magnetic shape memory alloys. He introduced the term magnetically induced reorientation into the scientific literature to describe a phenomenon in which the action of a relatively weak magnetic field causes the movement of twin boundaries separating regions with different orientations of the crystal structure. This process results in the rearrangement (reorientation) of the crystals, producing an exceptionally large deformation of the material—orders of magnitude greater than that of conventional giant magnetostriction.

This phenomenon was discovered in Helsinki at the end of the 20th century, and it took some time before it was fully accepted by the scientific community, as no one expected such a large deformation to be induced by a magnetic field. Although the phenomenon is now well described, its physical nature is still not fully understood. At the Institute of Physics, we study and analyze all aspects of the material’s behavior in order to understand the underlying physics and to explore potential applications of this unique effect.

DSc. Thesis:

The academic title of Doctor of Science is a mark of recognition for exceptionally high qualifications, demonstrated through the creation of significant, scientifically original works that contribute to the advancement of research in a specific field and reflect a distinguished scientific profile.
