Kateřina Šámalová's lecture opened up the topic of social safety in the workplace

How can we create a working environment in which people feel respected, can openly share their experiences, and are not afraid to point out problematic situations? These and many other questions were addressed in a lecture by Kateřina Šámalová, ombudswoman at Charles University, organized by the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences on the occasion of International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

The opening remarks were given by FZU Director Michael Prouza, who emphasized the importance of addressing issues that are fundamental to the functioning of the organization, even though they often remain unnamed. At the same time, he reminded the audience that building a respectful work culture is not a one-time step, but a long-term process involving not only management, but also each individual employee.

The lecture itself offered a comprehensive view of social security in the academic environment. It was stated that it is based on the key principles of dignity, equal opportunities, and collective responsibility. Participants also learned how social safety is enshrined in legislation, how it is reflected in the everyday practice of scientific institutions, and how to recognize situations that may be problematic in a timely manner.

An integral part of the program was the topic of inappropriate behavior and ways in which institutions can address it. The speaker presented specific tools and procedures that can help create an environment where people are not afraid to speak up in time—ideally before individual situations escalate into a systemic problem. The discussion also touched on the role of individuals, colleagues, and management in supporting the prevention and resolution of these situations.

The meeting confirmed that employees are interested in the topic of social safety and that open communication is a key prerequisite for a healthy work environment. The lecture was followed by an informal lunch, which provided an opportunity to continue the debate, share experiences, and follow up on the topics raised during the lecture.
