The Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (FZU) is helping to organise the Month of Science on Wikipedia, a nationwide initiative to create and improve science articles on the Czech Wikipedia. The main editathon will be held on 14 May 2026 at our Prague site on Cukrovarnická. Everyone is welcome, whether you have edited Wikipedia before or not. The initiative runs from 1 May to 15 June 2026.

Science changes the world. Wikipedia makes it available to everyone. This is the idea behind this year's initiative, which aims to make reliable information easier to find and show that knowledge should not stay only in laboratories or academic journals. It should reach everyone.

"For millions of people, Wikipedia is the first place they look for answers — to check a fact, understand a new discovery, or find out who changed the history of science. The Month of Science on Wikipedia helps bring reliable knowledge from the research world to the general public," says Klára Joklová, Executive Director of Wikimedia Czech Republic.

During May, you can join editathons, workshops and discussions with scientists from many different fields. The main editathon will take place on 14 May 2026 at the FZU building on Cukrovarnická, from 3 to 7 pm.

You can write new articles or improve existing ones. Experienced trainers from Wikimedia CZ will be there to help you throughout the day. In the afternoon, we will also offer a guided tour of the historic FZU site and a visit to the electron microscopy laboratory with Dr Martin Ledinský, where you can learn about the making and future of solar cells.

"Sharing the results of research with the public is one of the most important tasks of scientific institutions. Wikipedia is a unique tool for this," says Michael Prouza, Director of the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

"It does not replace expert sources, but it helps people learn about scientific discoveries and their effect on society. It makes science easier to understand and open to all. The Month of Science on Wikipedia connects research with education, and that is something we are happy to support."

Get involved and win

Joining the competition is easy. Just edit or create an article on a science topic, or upload a photo, and write the hashtag #veda in your edit summary. Active participants can win prizes from the Zjisti víc podcast, 21. století magazine and FZU.

The project connects research institutions and universities. "Charles University has always encouraged its students and staff to write and edit Wikipedia articles and share knowledge from their fields," says Helena Láznička, who coordinates the partnership between Charles University and Wikipedia.

"Taking part in the Month of Science on Wikipedia is part of a long-term plan to help people think critically, understand media, and use reliable sources. These skills are more important than ever today."
