The 2026 EPS Europhysics Prize for outstanding contributions to condensed matter physics was awarded to Libor Šmejkal, Jairo Sinova, and Tomáš Jungwirth for their discovery of altermagnetism. The prize has been awarded since 1975 (this year marks its 42nd edition) and is one of the most prestigious European awards in the field of condensed matter physics.
The award will be presented at a ceremony on September 22, 2026, during the 32nd General Conference of the EPS Condensed Matter Division (CMD32), organized in collaboration with the Austrian Physical Society in Graz. The EPS Europhysics Prize is awarded in recognition of a significant and clearly identifiable discovery, breakthrough, or contribution in the field of condensed matter physics that, in the opinion of the selection committee, represents scientific excellence. The prize honors research for which a significant portion was conducted in Europe.
