Re:Vision of Science is a one-day Open Science conference focusing on research data, research data management (RDM), and the future of research assessment within the Czech Academy of Sciences and beyond.
The event brings together Czech institutional experience with international perspectives and opens discussion on how data policies and Open Science practices reshape everyday research.
The programme features international speakers linked to EOSC and the Helmholtz Association. The conference takes place in the Kochanovská Hall at the Institute of Physics, Czech Academy of Sciences, on 11 June 2026, 9:00–16:30 (registration from 8:30).

Keynote speaker: Mathijs Vleugel
Mathijs Vleugel holds a PhD in biophysics/cell biology and became head of the Helmholtz Open Science Office in September 2024. In this role, he supports the Helmholtz Association, its research centers, and the wider research community in shaping the cultural change towards Open Science. Before joining the Helmholtz Open Science Office, Mathijs worked as a science policy expert at the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities (ALLEA), where he coordinated the 2023 revision of the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity and contributed to policy statements at the intersection of Open Science, Research Integrity, and Research Assessment. He also serves as the chair of the German National Chapter of the Coalition on Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA).
Keynote speaker: Gareth O’Neill
Gareth is a Principal Consultant on Open Science at Technopolis Group specialising in open science, research careers, and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).
He is an ambassador for Plan S under cOAlition S and is developing the EOSC Open Science Observatory in the EOSC Track project. Gareth has recently developed the Researcher Assessment Framework in the OPUS project and the Research Career Framework in the SECURE project.
PROGRAM
The morning program (9:00-11:50) will be conducted in Czech and can be found in the Czech-language version of the event (please switch the website language to Czech to view it).
11:50-13:00 Lunch break
Small refreshments (coffee and sandwiches) will be provided. You can also visit the nearby Jídelna Slovanka, the bufet at UTIA CAS across the road, restaurant Cobolis, bistro Nhat Hai and other restaurants and bufets in the vicinity.
Afternoon program: Future of Research Evaluation in the Context of Open Science
13:00-13:45 Keynote: Driving Institutional Change to Strengthen Research Data and Software at the Helmholtz Association
Mathijs Vleugel (Head of Helmholtz Open Science Office) will introduce data practice at the Helmholtz Association, Germany’s largest research performing organization. It comprises 18 research centers working on pressing societal challenges across a wide range of scientific domains. The centers conduct highly collaborative research using complex scientific infrastructures such as particle accelerators, satellites, research vessels, and aircraft, generating substantial volumes of research data. In the context of these data-intensive activities, research data and software are becoming increasingly essential scholarly outputs, enabling transparency, reproducibility, scientific advancement, and innovation. Acting at the interface of strategy and practice, the Helmholtz Open Science Office supports the translation of Open Science principles into coordinated policies, fosters alignment across the centers, and enables implementation through guidance, collaboration, and community engagement. It also addresses the need for effective incentives and recognition mechanisms for data and software contributions. By aligning institutional policies, enabling infrastructures, and research assessment practices, the Helmholtz Association is driving institutional change to strengthen the quality, visibility, and value of research data and software.
13:45-14:30 Keynote: The Future of Open Science
Gareth O’Neill (Principal Consultant on Open Science at Technopolis Group) will present key developments in open science (including open access to research publications, open/FAIR data, and the European Open Science Cloud) and how to reform researcher assessment and integrate open science. The talk will especially focus on the pros and cons of realising open science and how to support and reward researchers to practise open science.
14:30-15:20 Panel discussion: Research Evaluation and COARA in practice
Michal Petr (Masaryk University), Patrik Španěl (J. Heyrovsky Institute of Physical Chemistry, CAS) and keynote speakers Mathijs Vleugel and Gareth O’Neill will discuss the COARA (The Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment) agreement and ways to implement it to achieve fair and accurate research assessment. Tereza Szybisty will moderate the discussion.
15:20-16:30 Workshops and parallel program
Fireside chat: Open Science & Research Assessment
Discuss open science with our keynote speakers Gareth O’Neill and Mathijs Vleugel. This is the time and place for your burning questions, curious comments and sharing practical experience.
The Dilemma Game: Academic Integrity (in Czech)
Play the Dilemma Game, which encourages an open and honest dialogue about scientific as well as social integrity. Note: The game session will be conducted in Czech. It's going to be led by Radka Římanová (Charles University), Zuzana Škardová (Charles University) and Irena Kozmanová (Masaryk University).
Panel discussion: Building data repositories for Open Science at the Czech Academy of Sciences
In the context of new Open Science programs, the institutes of CAS are building new data repositories. What has been their experience and practical tips so far? Moderator Marek Cebecauer (J. Heyrovsky Institute of Physical Chemistry, CAS) will ask the speakers: Antonín Fejfar (Institute of Physics, CAS), Jiří Vondrášek (Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, CAS), and Vojtěch Malínek (Institute of Czech Literature, CAS).
16:30-16:40 Reflections on Open Science today and tomorrow
The event is organized by the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (FZU CAS), co-organized by the Open Science Department of CAS Library and supported by EOSC CZ and OP JAK project AMULET.
