Anotation

Hard X-ray Free Electron Lasers are opening novel avenues in the investigation of fundamental processes in many areas of science, from physics to chemistry, biology and materials science, because they allow investigation of matter at the time scales of electron and nuclear dynamics (down to fs), with chemical selectivity and bulk sensitivity. I will briefly introduce the European XFEL and report on a selection of scientific highlights in different areas of research. Applications address fundamental processes of light-matter interaction, ultra-fast dynamic processes in liquids and solids, investigation of electronic and structural properties and their dynamics in biomolecules, nanostructures, disordered materials and high energy density states of matter.


Sakura Pascarelli 

Sakura Pascarelli received a Laurea in Physics at the University La Sapienza (Rome, Italy) and a PhD degree in Physics at the University Joseph Fourier (Grenoble, France). Her research activity with X-rays started at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN, Laboratory Nazionali di Frascati, Italy) in 1990. After joining the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF, Grenoble, France) in 1993, her scientific career evolved around the development of methods to probe the local and electronic structure of condensed matter by synchrotron X-rays. In the past twenty years, her main scientific interest was the investigation of matter at extreme conditions of pressure, temperature and magnetic fields using principally X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy and X-ray Magnetic Linear and Circular Dichroism. She was in charge of the X-ray absorption spectroscopy beamlines ID24 (1997-2019) and BM23 (2000-2019), Head of the Electronic Structure and Magnetism Group (2012-2015) and Head of the Matter at Extremes Group (2015-2019). In September 2019, she joined the European XFEL (Hamburg, Germany) as Scientific Director responsible for the development of the scientific program on the four hard X-ray instruments.


Vladimír Dvořák

(1934–2007)

Vladimír Dvořák was a solid state physicist and the most prominent Czech scientist in the theory of ferroelectricity and structural phase transitions. He was affiliated with the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague for his whole productive life. He served as its director in 1993–2001 and was the main protagonist of the revolutionary reforms of the Institute after 1989. He was a member of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic since 1995. His personality has strongly influenced the scientific program and development in the Department of Dielectrics of the Institute since the late sixties up to the present. He was a brilliant lecturer and is considered one of the most respected directors of the Institute. To commemorate his work and personality, the Institute Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences decided to organize an annual festive Dvořák lecture, given by prominent internationally renowned scientists in the field related to the research pursued at the Institute.
